Badges for your site

The badges a verified owner can embed on their own site - Listed, Reviewed and Benchmarked - what each one claims, how to style it, and why it stays honest.

A verified owner can put a badge on their own site, docs or README that links back to the listing. There are three, and a tool shows only the ones it has actually earned.

BadgeSaysEarned when
ListedListed ToolThe listing is published - it is a public page, not a draft
ReviewedEditor ReviewedOne of our editors has read the listing through and signed it off
BenchmarkedBenchmarked ToolThe tool has at least one approved, scored result on a public benchmark suite

Every badge needs the listing to be published first. A tool that is taken down earns none of them, however it was reviewed or scored before.

Not to be confused with the trust badges beside every benchmark number, which are covered in Review and badges.

Getting one

Open your listings. Each listing has a Badges section:

  1. Pick a badge. One the listing has not earned is greyed out, with what it still needs.
  2. Pick a theme. Light for a light page, Dark for a dark one, or Match the reader's system to follow each visitor's light or dark setting.
  3. Optionally pick your own colour. It paints the outline, the text and our shield in one colour, so the badge can sit in your brand. Without one, badges wear the navy of our shield.
  4. Pick a format, HTML or Markdown, check the preview on both a light and a dark background, and copy.

The snippet is a linked image. In HTML it looks like this:

<a href="https://redaction-tools.com/tool/your-tool?utm_source=badge">
  <img
    src="https://redaction-tools.com/badge/your-tool/listed.svg?theme=dark"
    alt="Listed on Redaction Tools"
    height="54"
  />
</a>

The image URL takes two optional parameters: theme (light, dark or auto) and color (six hex digits, without the #). Anything else is ignored rather than drawn.

Choosing a colour

The builder warns you when a colour is hard to read on a light background - yellow on white, for example. It is a warning, not a refusal: if your site is dark, use the dark theme and the colour becomes the outline of a dark card with white text.

A badge stays honest

A badge is not a picture you download once. It is drawn by us, each time it is loaded, from the listing as it is now.

  • A badge the tool stops earning turns grey. It then says only Redaction Tools and claims nothing - it does not break, and it does not go on claiming something that is no longer true. If the listing earns it again, it comes back on its own.
  • Changes show within the hour. Badges are cached for up to an hour, so a newly earned badge, or one that lapsed, may take that long to update on your site.
  • There is nothing to keep in sync. The snippet never changes; what it shows does.

As with everything else in this catalog, a badge cannot be bought. Reviewed and Benchmarked are decided by our editors and our scorer, and the only way to a better badge is a better listing - or a benchmark submission that holds up.
