Reading a listing

What each field on a tool's page means, what it claims, and the places where an absent value is a fact rather than a gap.

A tool's page is built from records, not prose, and every section is there to answer one question. This page says which.

Key facts

The panel at the top is the comparable part — the fields every listed tool has, so that two pages can be read side by side.

FieldWhat it says
VendorWho sells it, and the country they are headquartered in. "Not recorded" means we could not establish it, not that they have none.
MediaWhich of PDF, image, video, audio and text the tool redacts.
DeploymentOnline, desktop, self-hosted, API or browser extension. A tool can be several.
MethodManual, rule-based, AI-powered or hybrid — how the tool decides what to cover.
Free tierYes or no. This is "free forever", never a trial.
TrialThe published trial length, or "None". A trial and a free tier are recorded separately and always displayed separately.
Entry priceThe cheapest published rate, with its unit. "Not published" is a finding, not a blank.

Every one of those five — media, deployment, method, a pricing position, and our own writing — has to be present before a tool becomes a page at all. See what a listing has to clear.

What it does

Our own description, written by an editor. It is at least 400 characters, and vendor copy never counts toward that minimum. If a tool has been claimed by its vendor, anything the vendor wrote appears lower down under From the vendor, in its own labelled block — so you always know who is talking.

Plans and pricing

One row per public plan, with its price, its unit and what it includes.

Three things to watch for:

  • A metered plan usually carries two rates — a monthly fee and an overage rate that applies once its allowance runs out. Both are shown, because either one alone misleads.
  • An allowance is published in the unit the vendor published it in. A plan that caps pages is not described as capping documents, even where that would make the table tidier.
  • "Not published" means the vendor does not state a figure. We do not fill it in by inference, and we do not treat an unpublished cap as unlimited.

Each price carries how we obtained it and when we last checked — read automatically, entered by an editor, or supplied by the vendor. The marks and what they oblige us to are in the methodology.

Note that the last-checked date is not the date the price changed. Prices are re-checked far more often than they move, so that date describes our attention, not the vendor's behaviour.

Our assessment

Strengths and Limitations, written by us. These are editorial judgements and are labelled as such. They are not scores, they are not derived from a benchmark, and no vendor can buy, edit or veto them.

Common questions

Shown only where we have questions worth answering for that tool. An absent section means we had nothing to add, not that the tool is obscure.

What a listing is not

It is not a benchmark result. Nothing on a tool's page measures how well it redacts — whether the text under a black box is really gone, whether a face is missed in frame 300. That work is designed and scheduled but not yet published, and until it is, no figure here should be read as a quality score.
