Worked out from each plan's published rate, reading the figures above as one month's work. Subscription plans read Included in the plan rather than a per-document figure: a monthly fee is not a per-document price, and dividing one into the other would need a volume no vendor publishes. A metered plan is priced past its allowance at its published overage rate; one that caps out with no such rate says so instead of quoting a price it would not honour.

Our assessment

KeptPDF is a general PDF toolkit — 26 tools covering redaction, OCR, merge/split, signing, watermarking and metadata removal — built around one design choice: every operation runs locally in the browser. The vendor invites users to confirm this in the DevTools Network tab, and the recent-files list lives only in the browser's IndexedDB.

Redaction. The redact tool scans for 45 kinds of sensitive data (SSNs, account numbers, emails, phone numbers, names, dates) and holds uncertain matches for a Redact/Skip decision. Redacted pages are flattened and rasterised, so the underlying text is actually gone rather than hidden under a box. Each run can produce a SHA-256 certificate recording input/output hashes and a per-category breakdown. There is also an anonymisation mode that swaps names for tokens like [PERSON_1], aimed at preparing documents for AI tools.

Trade-offs. Rasterising pages means the redacted output loses selectable text unless you re-run OCR (which is also on-device). The vendor does not say how detection works, and is upfront that a text scanner won't catch handwriting, faces or text baked into scanned images. Large files are bounded by browser memory (~500 MB practical limit on Pro).

Who it suits. Individuals and small firms that want a cheap, no-upload redactor with a verifiable audit trail. The Practice tier (2–25 seats) adds shared redaction policies and a BAA template; a server CLI is sold separately at $4,800/year per organisation.

Strengths

  • All processing happens in the browser — documents are never uploaded
  • True removal: redacted pages are flattened, original text is destroyed
  • SHA-256 redaction audit certificate per run
  • Generous free tier with unlimited single-file use
  • On-device OCR and metadata removal included

Limitations

  • Rasterised output loses selectable text unless re-OCR'd
  • Detection method not disclosed; no handwriting, face or image-text detection
  • File size bounded by browser memory
  • No public API; CLI is a separate $4,800/year licence
  • Free tier adds a KeptPDF footer to output

Common questions

Does KeptPDF upload my files?
No. According to the vendor, all processing runs locally in your browser and files are never sent to KeptPDF's servers.
Is the redacted text really removed?
Yes. KeptPDF flattens each redacted page to an image, so the original text is not present in the output file.
How much does KeptPDF cost?
Free ($0, 25 MB files, limited bulk), Pro at $29/month, and Practice at $99 per seat per month for 2–25 seats. A server CLI costs $4,800/year per organisation.
